Ahmet Ümit’s poems were published under the title Sokağın Zulası in 1989. His first collection of short stories, Çıplak Ayaklıydı Gece, was published in 1992. This was followed by his detective story collections, Bir Ses Böler Geceyi, Agatha’nın Anahtarı, and Şeytan Ayrıntıda Gizlidir. He also tried a different style of writing with his books Masal Masal İçinde and Olmayan Ülke, which were aimed at both children and adults.
In 1996, his first novel Sis ve Gece was considered a masterpiece in detective fiction. This was followed by Kar Kokusu, Patasana, and Kukla. His other books include Ninatta’nın Bileziği, İnsan Ruhunun Haritası, Aşk Köpekliktir, Beyoğlu Rapsodisi, Kavim, Bab-ı Esrar, İstanbul Hatırası, Sultanı Öldürmek, Beyoğlu’nun En Güzel Abisi and Elveda Güzel Vatanım.
Ahmet Ümit also co-wrote Başkomser Nevzat-Çiçekçinin Ölümü and Başkomser Nevzat-Tapınak Fahişeleri with Ismail Gülgeç, Başkomser Nevzat-Davulcu Davut’u Kim Öldürdü? with Aptülika (Abdülkadir Elçioğlu), and Elveda Güzel Vatanım-İttihatçıların Yükselişi with Bartu Bölükbaşı. His works have been translated into over 20 languages.
